What are Static HTML Websites?

Static HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) websites are the original way of building websites. Web developers would write HTML code into a text editor, upload it to a server and that was a page published! Using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and JS (Javascript) meant that some nice designs could be created.

This style of website is still quite popular, but has evolved over the years to be easier to use and have a range of more compex functionality that can be added to a static HTML website easier than before.

When we create HTML websites, we primarily use a framework called CodeIgnitor. This gives us the benefits of a static HTML website, as well as the ease of use of a CMS (Content Management System) like WordPress.

Benefits Of Using a Static HTML Website

Very secure. With limited ways of accessing the server files, makes hacking the site for more difficult that it is for a CMW website.
Speed. Load times of static HTML websites are much faster than those that use a CMS. Load speed is an important factor for SEO and how Google rates a website.
No Updates. HTML sites don’t require ongoing maintenance in the way WordPress sites need constantly updating.

Drawbacks to Using a Static HTML Website

Learning curve. You will need to understand basic code to be able to make simple changes. With no friendly interface, you will need to know basic HTML to make text bold, or center aligned etc.
Additional Functionality. With a CMS website, it is a case of clicking Add to a new peice of functionality. With a static HTML site, you will need to know how to code, or where to paste code from a developer to create new functionality.
Developer Fees. Chances are you will need a developer to help you enhance the website. These fees are not neccessarily needed with a CMS website as you can do it yourself easily.
